A very successful season for Whitchurch Wayfarers Colts was celebrated at the recent presentation evening.

The Under 11s led by Gerald Whitehouse and Mark Trevethan finished half way up their league, with the focus more on technique and enjoyment of the game. The awards for the team were shared around with Nathan Ord, Isaac Staig, Matteo Pearce and George Andrews all going home with a trophy.

At the beginning of the season, it was touch and go whether the Under 13s would be able to compete, with a shortage of players and coaches. To finish the season well placed in the league and with a half share of the cup was a remarkable achievement and testament to the commitment of all involved.

The success of the team has been due both to some outstanding individual performances and excellent work by all players contributing to a great team effort.

The best batsmen and all rounder was Charlie Barriball who scored 605 runs and took 14 wickets during the season. The best bowler was Emma Jackman with 12 wickets. The standard of fielding was very high, but the award was presented to Josh Emptage for his valuable run saving throughout the season. The sportsman award was presented to Barney Tossell, for his commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season.

The under15s developed well as the season went on with most playing a leading role in senior cricket as well. The awards were shared around between Billy Barriball, Rob Bone, Ben Hodge, Josh Towl and Dan Poole, all of whom were regulars in the senior second XI and made valuable contributions.

Dan Poole was also presented with the club’s oldest trophy, the Beaver Cup, which recognises the improvement and development strides that he has made during the season.

The Pedrick cup for best colt was presented to Billy Barriball for the second time. Billy scored his maiden, senior league hundred this season and was a fixture in the first team.

Finally, the Crocker shield for junior clubman of the year was presented to Josh Meadows for his regular support at all the home colts matches during the season.

Anyone interested in joining Whitchurch colts should contact Kevin Freedman on 01822  852034. Coaches and players and always welcomed.

Horse Racing Night Report by WhitWay

An excellent night was had by all at the club on Friday at the inaugural Whitchurch Horse racing night.

A track of 6 lanes was laid out divided into 15 squares, on occasion with obstacles in the route. The club’s resident and maths genius, Hammy,  was in charge of the odds with Bob calling the horses home.

The first race was the Committee Cup and saw Cockney Rebel romping home.

Subsequent races were auctioned for owners, until the 5th race which was the Player’s Cup. Steady Eddy hadn’t made it out of the stalls, by the time  Biased Umpire cruised home.

The final race was the Whitchurch National. Run under the cover of darkness, this was a closely fought race between Syrup Mirror and Mirror Syrup that had the crowd enthralled and the caller in a tangle.

As the bookies totted up their profits, the owners and punters retreated to the bar to lick their wounds, sell their horses to a French restaurant and hope for better luck next time.

25 Not out Family Day – Report by WhitWay

The inaugural “25 not out” trophy was held on 29th May.

4 teams – McCall-Hall, Northey, Hodge and Emptage – took to the field to play 3 games in around robin format.

The weather early was threatening was soon brightened up.

With 6 players and 3 matches, every player was required to open the batting once, ensuring in keeping with the spirit of the day that everyone was given an equal opportunity.

As the weather improved, so did the scoring. Early matches recorded scores of 35 a side off 5 overs, but this was soon up to 50 a side.

Every match was close, but after 2 games each there were 2 wins for Mccall-Hall and Northey and 2 defeats for Hodge and Emptage.

Instead of playing the dead rubbers, the format was changed directly into a wooden spoon match and the final.

The Emptages beat the Hodges, meaning than Steve Hodge’s team finished with the wooden spoon on his own competition.

The final was one by the McCall-Halls, largely helped by a last minute ringer knocking off 25 and retiring in double quick time.

The presentation of the “25 not out” trophy was made to Gavin Hall, in the absence on winning team leader Mhairi Mccall.

The day was a great success and it is hoped that this event will become an annual fixture in the calendar.

Thanks were paid to Steve Hodge for his commitment to all aspects of the club over the last 25 years, as well as to Sandra for her enduring support and the splendid tea that was provided.

Colts

Whitchurch Wayfarers colts recently marked a very successfully season by holding their presentation evening at the club.

 The U13s had a perfect league season winning all their games and were therefore crowned as champions. Billy Barriball was the leading player but received excellent support from all his team during the season.

Prize winners –

Best Batsman – B Barriball; Runner up – J Monger;

Best Bowler – C Hodges; Runner up D Monger;

All Rounder – C Barriball;

Best Fielder – D Towl;

Sportsman – B Megicks.

A special award was presented to Ben Hodge for the outstanding feat of taking 5 wickets in a single over.

 The U11s had a competitive season and finished mid table. This was a very encouraging result, given that at the end of April it appeared unlikely that the club could even field a side.

Prize winners –

Best Batsman – C Barriball;

Best Bowler – W Partington;

Best Fielder – E Nettleship;

All rounder – C Hodges;

Sportsman – A Trevethan.

 The winner of the Pedrick Cup for the colt of the year was Billy Barriball, who not only scored 3 consecutive centuries at U13 level, but has transferred his form into consistent performances for the second XI in the Devon league.

The Beaver cup for the most improved player was presented to Josh Towl.

Finally, a new award was presented for Junior Clubman of the year. The shield, which has been created in memory of Den Crocker, is intended to recognize the contributions of the younger members of the club. The inaugural winner was Stephanie Credicott who has been the First XI scorer for several seasons.

Seniors

The second team have had a hard season and were relegated on the final day of the season just 3 points shy of safety. Skipper Marc Kerswell worked tirelessly during the season just to get a full complement of players onto the pitch, but the youngsters that did play all coped admirably. A shortage of runs was the prime problem, but with a side that at the start of the season couldn’t count a league 50 between them, the response has been encouraging.

Josh Meadows was in a class of his own and won the best batsman award, scoring a century and 4 fifties in amassing over 400 runs for the season.

The best bowler award was a much tighter affair, eventually won by Owen Griffiths, largely due to his economy rate of under 3, while taking 12 wickets.

The captain’s player award was presented to Joe Trembath, who was ever willing to play in either team at short notice and always gave his all.

The first team started the season slowly, but finished a creditable sixth. Most pleasing were the number of youngsters that stepped up from second team cricket to establish themselves in the first team. With a few experienced players this team should be pushing for promotion next season.

Martyn Credicott won the best batsman award for the third year in a row. The best bowler was Joel Heatley. The Captain’s player award was won by Dom Rushton. Dom also won the most improved player award, having stepped up from colts cricket and made the opening bowler spot his own.

The Ladies have struggled this season after losing several key players. Batsman of the year was Lesley Smith and Bowler of the year Cathy Griffin.

The John Jackson fielder of the year award was presented to Tom Sherrell.

Finally, the Clubman of the year trophy was presented to Chris Meadows who once again has worked tirelessly for the club in Administration, behind the bar and in keeping the field looking so good. Chris will be leaving the club due to work commitments and along with several other committee members will be sorely missed in 2010.

60th Anniversary Report by WhitWay

Filed under: events

Whitchurch Wayfarer’s Cricket Club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a match between a Present XI and a Past XI.

In the pavilion many happy memories were shared amongst friends old and new. Founding members David Gordon and Frank Toy were particularly welcomed. Good stories abounded from them, Dave Endacott, Stuart Munday, Malcolm May and many others. Days when no fence formed the boundary, batsmen scored chanceless hundreds, bowlers were unplayable and the catches were sublime.

On field the Past XI fielded first with Gavin McDougall and Stuart Munday both picking up two wickets. However, nobody could contain Josh Meadows who raced to 129 with 14 4’s and 6 6’s and a bit of luck. A late flurry by Joel Heatley (21) and Marc Kerswill (13) saw the team reach a challenging 218.

After the early loss of Phil Mansfield, Jerry Warland and Dave Watson renewed an old partnership and edged the score towards 50 before Warland misread a delivery and was bowled. After that it was always a struggle. Tom Gordon, grandson of David, Jez Stokes and Paul Crocker managed 11 4’s and a six between them but they fell to Tom Dunne grandson of the late Den Crocker who would have relished the performance. Tom ended up with the performance of a life-time of 5 for 65 his last victim being big gun McDougall who hit 5 sixes before being bowled. The Present XI beat the Past XI by 40 runs but it was the memories retold in the pavilion that helped make this a special day.

It looks like the rain gods are going to abate long enough for us to get this show on the road.

There will be a welcome and presentation from 1pm, followed by a buffet lunch.

The match will commence at 2pm and play straight through with a BBQ afterwards.

There is a Tribute barrel on for the ale drinkers and plenty of cider in for the rest.
